Chitwan National Park is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Nepal. The park is home to numerous species of birds, wild animals, and flora. Back in the days, this park was known as Royal Chitwan National Park and used to be the hunting ground for royals. However, the park got soon declared as the conservation area. From then on, the number of rare species has increased immensely. 

Chitwan National Park is home to more than 700 species of wildlife, including 19 species of snakes, 113 species of fishes, 38 gharials, 63 species of mammals, 82 breeding tigers, and several other animals, including leopards and one-horned rhinos. Chitwan National Park is a paradise for lovers as 543 species of birds are recorded in the park with hundreds of migrating birds that come into this park during the new season.

What is the area of Chitwan National Park?

Located on the opposite side of the Rapti River from Sauraha, Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal established in 1973. Later, in 1984, the park was declared a Natural World Heritage Site. The Chitwan National Park is spread over 952.63 square kilometers in the subtropical inner Terai, south-central Nepal. 

Best time to go to Chitwan National Park
Chitwan National Park remains open throughout the year, however, Autumn (October to December) is the best time to see wild animals. The weather is also moderate and joyful. Whereas June to  September faces a very hot and humid climate including monsoon, which makes the trip exhausting. Spotting animals are also difficult and forest path becomes muddy, not preferable at all. 

 

How to get to Chitwan National Park?

From Kathmandu or Pokhara, it will take 4 to 6 hours to reach Chitwan by bus, and the only airport is situated in Bharatpur 10 kilometers away from the national park. Usually, bus leaves around 7 AM and 7:30 AM every morning to Chitwan from both Kathmandu and Pokhara. 

Things to do in Chitwan National Park

Jungle Walk with local guide

Jungle Walk is one of the very famous activities to do in Chitwan National Park. Going on a jungle walk is the best way to see wild animals and birds into their habitat. Not only that, during Chitwan Jungle Walk, you will also get to see much florae. You have both options for this jungle walk alone or in a group. You can get to see animals like rhinos, rhesus monkeys, deer, birds, and other animals. 

Jeep Safari at Chitwan national park

If you are not fond of walking for hours into forests then Jeep Safari is a very good alternative for you. Jeep Tour will take you deep into the forests in a short time, and you can see the closets of view wild animals. You will be accompanied by an experienced guide and a driver during the Jungle Jeep Tour.
 

Elephant Safari in the jungle

Elephant Safari is a very old and popular way to explore Chitwan National Park. You will sit on an elephant and wandering around the forest. Of course, Elephant Safari is a thrilling activity to do but many travelers are saying no to Elephant abuse. It is all up to you to decide whether you want to do it or not. Usually, Elephant Safari lasts for around 1 to 1 and a half hours. 

Visit Elephant Breeding Center in a national park

Elephant Breeding Center is made to protect endangered elephants. Here, you will see a small museum and many elephant babies. You can see how elephants are raised here and foods are prepared for them. 

Canoeing in Chitwan

Early morning canoe tour is a very good option to spot some rare birds, gharial, and marsh mugger crocodiles along with watching gorgeous sunrise. The ride lasts for 1 to 2 hours. Canoeing is a very good way to escape amidst nature and soak the calmness of the surroundings. 

Visit Tharu Village at sauraha

Tharus are one of the ethnic groups of Nepal. In the Tharu village tour, you will see the traditional lifestyle of the villagers. You can explore Tharu Cultural Center where you will see dresses, weapons, antiques, and other valuables of these people. During the Tharu village tour, you will get to see the culture and tradition of these people along with their cultural dance.
