This Three Passes Trek is a 19 days long plan, beginning and ending in Kathmandu. It will start with a flight to Lukla Airport and then to Phakding. Slowly, the trek will progress through Everest Region's notable stops, such as Namche and Tengboche. The first pass you will climb on tour is Kongma La Pass.

After Kongma La Pass, you will climb Cho La Pass via Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp. Then, you will arrive in Gokyo Valley to summit the last of the Three Passes, Renjo La Pass. Upon ascending all the passes, you will trek back to Lukla through Khumbu Region and fly back to Kathmandu to conclude the trek.

Everest Three Pass Trekking Route

One of the most inclusive treks in Nepal, the Three Passes Trek 19 Days Routes, starts with a flight to Lukla(2,600m) from Kathmandu. After landing at the entrance of the Everest Region, you'll pass through the beautiful trekking trail to Phakding. From Phakding, you will reach Namche Bazaar(3441m), the region's hub. 

You'll spend an off day in Namche to get habituated to the altitudes. You will have a few hiking options to spend the day well on this day. One to Khumjung village, another to Everest View Hotel, and the last to Sagarmatha National Park Tourist Center.   

One acclimatization day in Namche will make you ready for the walk to Tengboche(3,800m), Dingboche(4,410m), and Chhukung(4,730m). You will trek through those villages in three days. And you will have another acclimatization day of the trek in Chhukung village, which is a must. There will be a big day after Chhukang's stay to climb the first mountain pass, i.e., Kongma La Pass(4,900m).

After summiting Kongma La Pass, you will travel through Lobuche village(4,900m) and the Gorakshep stop. This is where you will hike to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar(5,550m). Finally, in the wake of exploring the two notable stops, you will head towards Cho La Pass(5,420m) via villages like Dzongla(3,810m) and Thangnak. 

And then, you march into the picturesque Gokyo Valley(4,700m). Traveling and exploring the villages and lakes of the valley, you will find yourself at the pinpoint of Renjo La Pass(5,340m), the last pass of the trek. 

As all the passes and stops are done, you will trek back to Lukla(2,800m). To reach Lukla, you will spend three more days walking through Marlung, Thame, Namche Bazaar, and Phakding. The exact stops like Namche Bazaar and Phakding will come along once again. You will retrace your footprints to cross those places to get into Lukla. And joining a flight back to Kathmandu from there, you will conclude this beautiful long trek in Kathmandu(1,400m). This is how you will cover the Three Passes Trek's route.

Best Time for Everest Three High Passes Trek

The timing for any trek is quite an important thing to look at. If you have all the knowledge about the right timing for a tour, you have already lowered the uncertainties and adversities of the trek by half. That is why it is essential to know the best timing for the hike you opt for. And that is the main reason why we have written this heading for you.

We will guide you through the Everest Region's weather experiences for over a year. Below, We have written about all four seasons: Autumn, Spring, Monsoon, and Winter. And after reading this, you can choose the best time for 3 Pass Trekking without any confusion. Let's get started. 

Everest Three High Passes Trek in Autumn (September, October, November)

Autumn, one of the best times to visit Nepal, functions through September, October, and November. Nepal is a post-monsoon time when the monsoon season has left the atmosphere. Due to that fact, the terrain and landscapes in Nepal look like they have been washed up. So that is the first benefit of traveling in Autumn.

Temperatures in Autumn in Nepal are pretty good for trekking in the mountains. The average temperature around the lower region of the trek remains around 10-18 degrees during the day hours. With such a temperature, you will have no difficulty with the temperature this season. However, there will be some plunge in temperature in the Everest Region when it's dark and when you gain more elevation. So make sure you have a few good clothes for such hours.     

Moreover, Autumn is known for its stable weather conditions. Therefore, if you travel in Autumn around Nepal, there are meager chances of trip cancelation. The Khumbu region and other parts of Nepal undergo beautiful climate situations. Some are unobstructed mountain views, clear skies, bright trekking days, calm breezes, and snow-loaded peaks.

Everest Three High Passes Trek in Spring (March, April, May)

Spring, the time through March-May, is another right time for trekking in Nepal. It is the peak trekking season in Nepal. That is why you will find overwhelming numbers of people throughout the journey. 

It is the pre-monsoon season coming into Nepal way before Monsoon does. This means there are no chances of massive rainfall until May. So instead, you will get the most pleasant circumstances. Warm temperatures, continuous clear mountains, vibrant landscapes, colorful trails, and bright days are some of the perks of Spring. 

If you see the temperature graph for the Spring season in Nepal, the lower parts of the trek, like Tengboche, Namche, and Gokyo, have average temperatures of around 5-20 degrees during the day. 

However, the night and morning hours in Khumbu Region can constantly be freezing below 0 degrees. Furthermore, the temperature is frigid in the much higher parts of the region, like Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Kongma La Pass, and other factors.

Moreover, Spring is cheered for the flowering season. The forests of Nepal are colorful due to the Rhododendron flowers, and so are the trekking trails. This could be another reason why you should choose Spring. The peaks of the Khumbu region, like Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Lobuche, and others, are snow washed by the winter season. 

In short, Spring season Three Passes Trek is a big yes. The good conditions of the season will make your trek a pleasing one.   

Everest Three High Passes Trek in Winter (December, January, February)

Winter is the coldest time of the year in Nepal. This is because so many people take Winter as an off-season for trekking in Nepal. And the trekking routes of Nepal are pretty peaceful during this season.

Yes, Winter is a cold and snowy season in Nepal. There is massive snowfall in the mountains, and the temperature is freezing. However, not all three months of Winter- December, January, and February, are that bad for trekking. The first two weeks of December are worthwhile. You will get conditions of the Autumn season in that period. Thus, trekking in the mountains is possible in early Winter. 

Similarly, the last few weeks of February can be another time in Winter for trekking. Winter is at its peak in January but slowly lowers through February. Therefore, that time of Winter is also good to go on the trails of Nepal. You can't put Winter aside for trekking in Nepal.

The rewards are considerable if you are bold enough to opt for Winter's early and late weeks. Winter is the best time for mountain vistas due to massive white snowfall. Also, the trekking paths are less crowded than in Autumn and Spring. As a result, you will have a quiet time in the Everest Region. 

Overall, Winter is not as good as Autumn and Spring for trekking. But the early and late days of the Winter season are okay for trekking. So if you want to do the Three Passes Trek in Winter, we can find the right day.    

Everest Three High Passes Trek in Monsoon ( June-July-August)

It is listed at last for some reasons. Monsoon is a less preferred time for trekking in Nepal. It is entirely off-season in Nepal. You will find a few travelers around Kathmandu preparing for treks in the mountains. And that is rightfully alright.  

The monsoon or Summer season is the warmest and wettest season of all. June, July, and August in Nepal are three humid months of the season. The country receives massive rainfall throughout the season. Consequently, the higher areas observe colossal snowfall. The trails of Nepal remain wet, slippery, and landslide-prone. Mountains are not always visible. As for these conditions, Monsoon is a not-so-popular time for trekking in Nepal. 

However, the early days of June and the last few weeks of August are somehow doable. Monsoon is less active in Nepal during those two sessions than in July. And you can do the trek. But make sure you have an experienced guide to help you out. The monsoon treks are pretty prone to problems. Thus you will need an excellent guiding person in front of you. 

The monsoon season rewards spectacular mountains and landscapes, especially after rainfall. This is the most exciting part about the Monsoon season trekking. Also, the trails are pretty peaceful. 

But, as said earlier, you must take on various uncertainties to enjoy the benefits. The weather is quite unpredictable throughout Monsoon. Thus, we do not highly recommend the Monsoon season for Three Passes Trek. But if you want to trek anyway, our experienced team will find an appropriate time in the season and safely guide you.      

Everest Three (3) High Pass Trekking Difficulty

Everest Three High Passes Trekking is a moderate trek in the heavenly Khumbu Region. The tour can be a hard one for some and easy for others. We mean to say it depends on your trekking experience and physical endurance level. 

If you have been trekking in the Himalayas for some time, if you have done similar treks more than a couple of times, Everest 3 Passes Trek should not be difficult. However, if you have never done anything like that in the mountains, this trek is challenging.

In general, the critical difficulties of the Everest Three High Passes Trek are its distance, duration, elevation, trail nature, and weather. First, let's start with length. The trek is about 166km long through the Khumbu Region. Such a distance is not a joke. It will surely test you. 

Likewise, you will need at least 15 days to complete the trek. You will sleep, eat, walk, and repeat in the rural part of the region. On trekking days, you will trek for about 5-7 hours daily. So this part of the trek is also not easy. 

Moreover, the elevation of the trek is sky-touching. You will reach the highest height of the tour at Kala Patthar(5,550m). And you will hike above 5000m+ several times. Trekking and crossing those elevation numbers several times takes so much calm, perseverance, acclimatization, and hard work. So the altitude gains of the trek will test you a little bit. Similarly, the trek will climb steep sections, slippery trails, glacier walking, and rough terrains. You will have those things for more than two weeks. Taking on such a trail is another problematic part of the trek. Also, the higher parts of the region have extreme weather conditions. You will have strong winds and freezing temperatures at times of the tour. Thus the weather also demands you do something on the journey.  

So these are the significant challenges of the trek. But like there is a saying, difficult roads often lead to a beautiful destination. The Three Passes Trek will lead you to many beautiful destinations. You will not regret taking those adversities on. 

But make sure you come with enough preparation for the trek. Before the trek date, you better do cardio training and exercises such as cycling, trekking, hiking, jogging, swimming, etc.

Three High pass Trek Details Itinerary for 2022, 2023, and 2024

When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), a member of our waiting help staff will meet you there and take you to the hotel by a private tourist vehicle you choose and brief you about the details of the trek. We take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla the following day. After meeting the rest of our crew in Lukla, we immediately begin the 3–4 hour trek to Phakding. The next morning,  we resume hiking. After crossing the Dudh Koshi River, we register our permit number and group information at the Sagarmatha National Park entry in Monju's National Park office. The Hillary  Suspension Bridge is then crossed as we rise to Namche Bazaar. The following day, we will rest in Namche Bazaar, in the Khumbu region. After eating breakfast in Namche, we depart for  Tengboche. Next, our day starts off on the trail through ImjaKhola, after which we continue to  Tengboche and drop to the riverside while traversing a rhododendron and birch forest. Visit a  Buddhist nunnery at Deboche before continuing on to Pangboche. Then, from Orsho, we can see  Mt. Pumori's apical ridge before arriving at the chilly and windy settlement of Dingboche, where we spend the night. The following day, we continue our ascent via the ImjaKhola valley to reach glacier moraines surrounded by massive mountains. We continue to walk for the next three to four hours across the valley, keeping Lhotse and AmaDablam in view, until we arrive at Yak Bible. We go 30 minutes by foot from Bible to Chhukung, where we spend the night. We begin to ascend early in the morning after being acclimated to this altitude.

We have two options:

  • Ascend the hill northwest of Chhukung above the Nuptse glacier
  • Descend the Bible Valley to the high path above NiyangKhola

After a five-hour hike through Kongma La's (5535 meters) trail, we finally depart Chhukung. The descent, the most difficult and complicated part of today's hike, starts after that. Following a hike up the adjacent moraine, we turn north along the Khumbu glacier's trail and eventually arrive in Lobuche, where we spend the night. Then we head towards Gorakshep. The trail passes past the Khumbu Glacier's lateral moraine before reaching Gorakshep. We were able to see Kalapatthar after ascending to the summit of the Changri glacier. We shall then arrive in  Gorakshep. After passing via Gorakshep Lake, we continue on the route to Everest base. This is the goal of our journey. The next day, we spend the night in Gorakshep after returning on foot. After several hours of walking, we reach Kala Patthar.

The next day, we transverse through Dzongla.  We will then climb towards Thagnak and stay there overnight. We leave in the early morning and continue the path via the Ngozumpa glacier. Finally, we arrive at Gokyo village. We stay there for one day and two nights to relax. We stay in Gokyo valley to relax toward the conclusion of our second week of hiking.

Following that, we set off on foot early in the morning for Renjola Pass.  We divert from the main Gokyo Valley trail to follow Dudh Pokhari's Renjo la route. In order to go to Angladumba Tsho, the trail then continues down the stairs. We arrive in Marlung after an hour of walking. The following day, we proceed according to the established path, which is a drop from Marlung to Thame. We cross the Bhote Koshi and descend to Taranga before arriving at  LangmucheKhola. We then go over the bridge to Same. We descend the steep path and arrive at the Thamo settlement. We then arrive at Phurte. We finally arrive at Namche. On the next day, we depart from Namche and arrive in Lukla. Then we will take an early morning flight to Kathmandu. Three hours prior to the flight's scheduled departure time, a drop-off in a private tourist vehicle is arranged from the hotel to the airport. The following day we fly from Kathmandu to Lukla. The 40 minutes flight from Tribhuvan Domestic Airport (Kathmandu) to Tenzing Hilary Airport (Lukla) offers marvelous views of mountain ranges as rays of light fall on them. We start a 3-4 hours trek to Phakding shortly after meeting our crew members in Lukla. Overnight stay in a Lodge.

We continue along the trail soon after having our breakfast in Phakding. After crossing Dudh Koshi River, we register our permit number and group details at the National Park office in Monju, the entrance of the Sagarmatha National Park. Then we ascend to Namche Bazaar, crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge. Overnight stay in a lodge.

This is the day to rest in the center of the Khumbu region, the Namche Bazaar. It’s also a day to adjust our body to the high altitude. Though we stay in Namche, it is recommended that we stay active and moving. The place is well facilitated with banks, ATMs, and Cyber Cafés, and you can also visit the Sherpa museum or visit the local community.

We start for Tengboche after breakfast in Namche. On our way, beautiful views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt Ama Dablam, and Thamserku accompany us while walking the smooth and sometimes zigzag trail.

The morning view of the mountain panorama is outstanding, and you can click the breathtaking views of Kangtega range, Thamserku, Amadablam, Taboche, Kwangde, Tengboche, Lhotse, and Nuptse. Our day begins along the trail through ImjaKhola, then to Tengboche where we descend to the riverbank, through the rhododendron and birch forest. At Dingboche, visit a Buddhist nunnery and cross a few chortens to reach Pangboche where we can have a splendid view of the beautiful mountains. One can quickly notice the thinning vegetation on walking from upper Panboche to the dry and alpine terrain of Shomare. Next, we can view the apical ridge of Mt. Pumori from Orsho; then, finally, we reach the cold and windy village of Dingboche, where we stay overnight.

On the seventh day, we wake up to find ourselves amid a stone-walled alpine landscape of Dingboche. We continue our trek through ImjaKhola valley to glacier moraines in the middle of towering mountains. Our walk continues for the next 3-4 hours through the valley viewing Lhotse mountain and AmaDablam on our sides until we reach yak Bible, the herdsman's place. Walking further, we can have a fantastic view of the rocky and icy appearance of ImjaTse peak at the terminal moraine. Half an hour's walk from Bible leads us to Chhukung, where we can view the glaciers and snowy mountains. Overnight in Chhukung.

Getting acclimatized to this height, we start to ascend early in the morning. On this day, we enter the remote hinterlands of the mountains where we cannot find any teashops further, so we carry plenty of water for ourselves. We can either take a climb over the hill northwest of chhukung over the Nuptse glacier; the other option is to walk down the valley of Bible than to the high trail above NiyangKhola. On walking further, we can have a stunning view of the Island peak valley and the jagged ridge of AmphuLapcha. On ascending along the east side of NiyangKhola valley through a stony trail, we reach a wide basin with frozen lakes. Finally, we leave Chhukung after a 5-hour walk through Kongma La's (5535 meters) path. We get to the top to see the prayer flags fluttering to mark the pass at the ridge. Then, the descent begins, which is a complex and challenging experience to today's trek. We then climb the moraine on the far side, then turn north through the trail of the Khumbu glacier, which finally leads to today's final destination: Lobuche, where we stay overnight.

Early morning we will wake up to see the mesmerizing view of Cholatse. The early part of this one of the most challenging trips begins as we transverse through Dzongla across spur forest, which descends to a basin. Early morning, we step out of the small village and follow the trail through Ngozumpa glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal. Towards the end of the second week of our trek, we stay to rest in Gokyo valley. The acclimatization day is an excellent opportunity to climb Gokyo Ri, one of the best places to catch a view of the Everest region and the six lakes. The fourth lake is 3 Km north of Gokyo, with its high cliffs and peaks rising above it. The trail continues to the fifth turquoise blue shimmering lake, the biggest. We can even climb the hills at the edge of the lake to catch the breathtaking scenery of Cho-Oyu, Gyachung, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu. Beyond the fifth lake, Cho Oyu base camp, the spectacular view is worth watching. It's up to our interest, curiosity, time, and energy we have left whether we go as far as the sixth lake. Today we start to walk to Renjola pass early in the morning. We leave the main trail of Gokyo valley to take the Renjo la route by Dudh Pokhari. Tea House Accommodation Facilities on Everest Three Pass Trek 

The Everest Three Pass journey includes tea house accommodations and facilities. Of the 18 days, fifteen will be spent in remote tea houses on mountains and three at top hotels. These tea houses actually consist of small rooms furnished with one or two single beds, warm and cosy blankets, and soft pillows. Sleep on a comfortable mattress, undertaking scenic views from the windows overlooking the mountains circling them.

While you travel with us, we promise the best tea houses with great mountain views and scenic beauties. The rooms and bathrooms in guesthouses are not very luxurious but clean enough to provide some measure of comfort.

The same spectacle applies to a standard dining room that offers native wholesome foods and some foreign delicacies. In the lower elevation, Western-style toilets can be found. However, as you move up, mostly squat toilets will be available. 

Along the Everest Three Pass trail, besides local tea houses, other high-end accommodations are also available. These genre lodging facilities include the best and most comfortable rooms, with other luxury facilities. 

Meal We Will Consume for 18 Days in Everest Three Pass Trek 

The Everest Three Pass Culinary Experience is rich and satisfying, guiding you through the 18 tour days. Start your day from around 7 am to 8 am with breakfast options available in tea houses. French toast, honeyed bread with eggs and cheese, chapati or oatmeal, porridge, and fried potatoes, among smashed ones, are all suitable. For people who like sweet Sherpa, find Su Chya (butter tea), Tsampa, and Tibetan bread as samples.

You can have your fill of cereals, grains, and rice for lunch and dinner, targeting mainly carbohydrates. The mentioned dish of Dal Bhat, proposed as a traditional Nepali food, contains cooked rice, lentils boiled with vegetable curries and pickles. However, a variety of alternatives including noodles and momo pasta; pizza sandwiches and spaghetti are available at several stops.

All the lodges we have chosen to dine at value cleanliness and freshness more than anything else. Similarly, both Veg and Non- Veg food options are available. During this high-pass trip, we advise non-vegetarians to consume all vegetables and avoid meat for hygiene reasons. Enjoy a wide range of food, including local grains like Buckwheat & Millet and imported products such as noodles, spaghetti & pizza.

What Will Be Additional Expenses Rather than Package Cost?

Additional expenses besides the package cost include personal expenses and miscellaneous costs. Here is more in detailed about the additional expenses than the package cost below:

  1. Snacks, Bakery Items and Extra meals: While main meals are typically covered, indulging in bakery treats during acclimatisation hikes in places like Namche Bazaar or Gokyo can incur extra costs. Travellers often spend on personal preferences like snacks or special dietary items, which are not part of the package. Be mindful of these additional expenses during your trekking adventure.
  2. Add on luxury accommodations: Our package includes the basic tea house accommodations. However, if you in the middle of the trek decide to upgrade your accommodations this add-on opulence option will not be included in the package cost. 
  3. Drinks: Other charges, such as beverages – especially drinks that are alcoholic and sometimes hot chocolate or specialty coffees are usually not included in the cost of the package. 
  4. Drinking water: If you get thirsty on your route, there are three options with different prices that don’t contribute to your billing. First, one can purchase water filters and purifiers for safe drinking while travelling to Everest. Using these options promotes sustainable trekking. Furthermore, being an affordable alternative, bottled one will cost around $3 to $ 5 per bottle. For warm drinking water, you can pay an additional dollar or two in tea houses along the way. 
  5. Wifi Services: Besides the package cost, wifi charges also represent one of the expenses that adds as an additional expense for journeyers. Some villages in the Everest Three Pass trek do provide unlimited wifi which can be accessed cheaply at just around $1-$5 US in Different places of Everest territory like Lukla, Phakding, Dole, and Namche Bazaar, et cetera all over the place.
  6. Hot Showers: You will stay overnight in normal tea houses, and all the tea houses incur extra costs for facilities like hot showers. Travellers may use this hot shower till Gorakshep village near base camp. In most places, you’ll have a gas geyser and shower in the room. In other locations, they sometimes provide hot water in a bucket. You must pay for a hot shower on the Everest trekking route. The hot shower costs about $ 1-5 per application. The laundry charges are between US $4.0 and US$8 per Kg, including washing, rinsing, and drying your clothes. The laundry services offered to the trekkers on this route include hand-washing your clothes or using simple machines provided at teahouses. The washing can include detergent and water in the process of cleaning clothes. These extra laundry service charges will be an additional expense not included in the package cost. 
  8. Tipping for Guide and Porters: The Everest three-pass trek cost does not include tips for the guides and porters. This will add an additional for travellers. Despite not being compulsory, tipping the guide and porters is normal as one finishes the journey. This can be viewed as a way of thanking them for their efforts. It is a reward for workers that leads to a successful tour.  Thus, it allows you to pay any amount the guides and porters are happy with at the end of trekking in Lukla. While tipping, we recommend that one should give 10% of the total travel package.
  9. Oxygen Cylinder :- Supplemental Oxygen is a necessary safety measure used in high-altitude trekking in any emergency. Although both our guides and porters offer complete emergency assistance, the cost of procuring supplementary oxygen is counted as an extra charge. Altitude sickness may affect travellers, affecting their respiratory system in higher altitudes. Some cases of supplemental oxygen requirement may be spontaneous, with their procurement en route becoming essential for immediate relief. 

It is important to note that this price should not be treated as a part of package expenses, highlighting the necessity for budgeting regarding such health-related needs during the hike. While safety and well-being are the primary focus, we offer a comprehensive travel experience.

What Are Wifi and Charging Facilities On Trek?

The wifi and charging facilities along the path are satisfactory. Some tea houses provide wifi and charging services at a minimal cost, which usually ranges from $1 to $5. Essentially, such lodges improve the trekking lifestyles by providing an opportunity to stay connected while enjoying stunning views of the Everest region

Travellers have two main ways to access the internet while trekking.

  1. Everest Link wifi Card: The largest internet provider in the Khumbu region is Everest Link. Wifi cards are available in many tea houses and lodges on the trail. The prices range between NPR 500 ($4) to NPR 2,000($1O). In most cases, the quality of the connection drops when travelling up in altitude and at peak times, mainly because there are numerous users connected.
  2. Ncell or NTC Data Packages: If you have a Nepal's local SIM like Ncell SIM card or NTC, then you can buy data packages for minimal cost starting from Rs. 12. However, network coverage is very irregular and almost nonexistent above Namche Bazaar.

While communal areas in some tea houses have charging stations, an extra fee might be charged. Carrying a power bank guarantees that the electronic gadgets are fully charged at all times during the expedition.

  1. Flight to Lukla: The Everest Three Passes trek is mainly approached by Lukla, which can be reached from Kathmandu via daily flights. This scenic 20 to 30-minute flight, with an operating fleet of more than three airlines, offers passengers breathtaking views.
