Upper Mustang Trek bring you to the ancient kingdom of Mustang with the ever gracing presence of Buddhist religion. The old kingdom of Mustang, which is also known in the local language as Lo, has a long historical heritage. In the old times, Mustang was politically part of the Tibetan empire, and now one can feel the old relationship still alive the new Mustang (part of Nepal) with culture almost similar with Tibet. Architecture is borrowed from Tibetan styled building construction, and Buddhism takes the form as practiced by Tibetans. Today, Mustang is still considered to be a kingdom within the greater Nepal, as the king of Lo, oversees the order of Lo, although he has been stripped of many powers. Furthermore, the legitimacy is inscribed by the honorary rank of Colonel of Nepal Army being awarded to the king of Lo.
The trek is a relive of the olden days, as the trail is the same one as used by the salt caravans. As you follow through the road that previous inhabitants have used to travel for trade exchange (goods for salt) from the lowlands, one gets to see the capital Lo Mangtang. The king stays at the capital at his palace, and visits can sometimes be made. Being a Buddhist town, there are decorated monasteries, each with their own history – a 15th century Thugchen Gompa serves as an example to the history. Further, one can experience old local artificats in the amchi museum. Amchi refers to traditional Tibetan healers, and even serve the king.
